In the ICD-10 world, the definition for many diagnostic conditions have been revised or expanded to include additional information. In some cases, the definitions are more detailed than what the condition described in ICD-9. In other cases, ICD-10 introduces new coding conventions that previously did not exist. Here are some examples:
Granularity
In ICD-10, the diagnosis “Edema” (782.3) has been revised to include the following more specific definitions:
- R60.0 – Edema, Localized
- R60.1 – Edema, Generalized
- R60.9 – Edema, Unspecified
Laterality
In ICD-10, diagnosis “Impacted Cerumen” (380.4) has been expanded to include laterality:
- H61.20 – Impacted Cerumen, Unspecified
- H61.21 – Impacted Cerumen, Right Ear
- H61.22 – Impacted Cerumen, Left Ear
- H61.23 – Impacted Cerumn, Bilateral
Trimester
In ICD-10, diagnosis “Malnutrition in Pregnancy (648.93) has been expanded to include trimester:
- O25.10 – Malnutrition in Pregnancy, Unspecified Trimester
- O25.11 – Malnutrition in Pregnancy, First Trimester
- O25.12 – Malnutrition in Pregnancy, Second Trimester
- O25.13 – Malnutrition in Pregnancy, Third Trimester
Episode of Care
In ICD-10, diagnosis “Contusion of hand(s) (923.20) must be reported with the appropriate ICD-10 code that specifies a seventh digit for the episode of care:
- S60.211A – Contusion of Right Hand, Initial Encounter
- S60.211D – Contusion of Right Hand, Subsequent Encounter
- S60.211S – Contusion of Right Hand, Sequela
